Our History

Double Love was founded by four ladies from South Elgin, Illinois in 1981. It originally met at the South Elgin Lions Club. In exchange for the meeting space at the Lions Clubhouse, the Double Love ladies would plan, prepare, and serve dinner to the Lions for their Lions’ monthly meetings. This meal was Double Love’s sole fundraising source at the time. The Lions Club would make a monthly donation to Double Love for preparing and serving the monthly dinners. In the mid 80’s, a “Women’s Center” was opened at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. Arrangements were made for Double Love to move our monthly meetings from the South Elgin Lions Club to Sherman Hospital, where we continue to meet monthly.

Among the activities and events that took place when the club started were monthly S.O.S (for Save Our Sanity) daytime meetings for moms and kids, with six to eight moms and at least double the number of kids attending. Typically these were held at a member’s home (with a strict two-hour time limit so as to not overstay our host’s generosity), and we also did stroller outings at the mall, the library, fast food places, etc. The club also used to hold a family campout in the summer. For a few years we were even invited to speak to Elgin High School’s Child Development classes about mothering multiple-birth children. The high school students loved interacting with our twins.

Double Love’s children’s clothing sale started as a way for our members to exchange kids clothing. It was originally held at the South Elgin Lions Clubhouse. When we made the monthly meeting move to Sherman Hospital we opened our Children’s Clothing Sales to the public. For 20+ years the sales were held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin. Then in 2007 the sale was moved to St. John’s Lutheran School in Elgin. Now we usually have our Spring Sale in March and then our Fall sale at the end of August at St. John’s.

Double Love’s Philanthropic Involvement

Over the years Double Love has supported needy families at Christmas time, sometime these families had twins and almost all have had children. We have also supported members who have walked for March of Dimes (and other organizations too). Each year we financially support the IOMOTC (Illinois Organization Mothers of Twins Clubs) Philanthropic with money collected from the bake sale at the Children’s Clothing Sales. In 1990-1991 the IOMOTC Philanthropic was the “Good Neighbor Project.” Double Love was the sponsoring club that year and kept track of the 2,462 service hours that were donated by club members all over Illinois.

Double Love’s 30th Anniversary Celebration & Our Strength

Double Love celebrated our 30th Anniversary from August 2011 – May 2012. The highlight of that celebration was a Dinner, in April 2012 at Jimmy’s Charhouse in Elgin, Illinois. At this celebration twenty of our thirty members were present. The strength of Double Love over the years has been with the many close friendships that have formed by club members all starting with the common bond that we are mothers of twins. We have also strived to make connections with new mothers of twins, letting them know there is support and friendship within Double Love for twin moms. Double Love has a wonderful history and looks forward towards our next 30 years. Membership in Double Love includes being able to attend monthly meetings and events as your life permits, a monthly newsletter and membership with both the Illinois Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (IOMOTC) and the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (NOMOTC).
